Moonstone // Avengers
Completed: February 2013
Worn to: ZOMG Planes!!
Inspiration
It’s an understatement to say that I have a soft spot for villains, so when I saw Moonstone’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ version, I just knew this was a costume I needed to make – with it’s combination of Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel’s classic costumes. In fact, the only reason I made the classic Ms. Marvel costume was to serve as a counterpoint to Moonstone!
Construction
This costume is made from heavy-duty red spandex, wet-look black spandex, and gold foil spandex. After drafting the base pattern for the leotard, the black and gold details were cut out and top stitched onto the red spandex. I tend to prefer exposed stitching on the details for superhero costumes – it gives the costume a bit more texture and dimension; I think it helps ground the costume a bit more in reality.
Photos
This costume was photographed a top a real Japanese Zero from WWII – one of only three Japanese Zeros left in the world that still fly! As a huge WWII history nerd, getting to photograph this superhero costume atop such priceless pieces of history was a dream come true!
