Ms. Marvel // Avengers

Ms. Marvel // Avengers

Completed: December 2012
Worn to: IKKiCON 2012, Anime Los Angeles 2013

Inspiration

This is one of my ‘three-hour cosplays’ – so named because the costume took me about three hours to complete. I decided to make this costume on a whim…I wanted something new to wear for IKKiCON 2012 in Austin, TX but only had a few days before leaving for Texas. And so…Ms. Marvel was born! Technically this listing should be ‘Ms. Marvel // Avengers and X-Men’ but for simplicity I just listed Avengers. 😉

Construction

Because I was planning to make the new Moonstone (Ms. Marvel ver.), I already had all of the material necessary to make the costume. The black leotard is make out of 4-way stretch wet-look spandex and closes in the back with an invisible zipper. The gold logo was cut out of 4-way stretch gold metallic spandex, then top stitched onto the costume. The reason I prefer top-stitching logos onto superhero costumes (rather than slip-stitching the logo on or otherwise trying to hide the stitch) is because I prefer the look of exposed stitching. Superhero costumes have no seams. That looks good in a comic, but in real life I think it looks too ‘flat’ and ‘lifeless.’ Using exposed stitching (like top-stitching) adds an element of ‘reality’ that I like.

The mask is made out of molded foam and was purchased from Etsy seller ‘Masks By Mandy’ – she’s great and I highly recommend her!

**Construction Tip: Sew the logo onto the front of the leotard BEFORE sewing the leotard pattern pieces together. It makes the fabric easier to manipulate**
